Hay Fever: Beyond the Antihistamine

Fed up with sneezing, itchy eyes, and feeling like you’re battling nature every time you step outside? Wondering if there’s a gentler, more natural way to ease your hay fever symptoms without relying solely on antihistamines?

I know exactly how uncomfortable and exhausting it can be because I’ve been there too. I developed allergic rhinitis and hay fever as a teenager, and for years it disrupted my summers. But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be that way. During the early months of my nutritional training back in the early 90s, I made some simple yet powerful changes to my diet — and my symptoms became a thing of the past.

I know it’s easy to blame it on nature, but if that were the whole story, wouldn’t we all be allergic to it? The truth is, there are deeper factors at play within the body that increase our sensitivity to pollen and other allergens.

‍ ‍Two of the key factors I see again and again are:

  • Dehydration — which causes a rise in histamine levels, making the body hyper-sensitive.

  • A compromised gut — specifically a leaky or inflamed gut lining, which can amplify allergic reactions.

The good news?  You can ease or even resolve symptoms quickly by hydrating fully (lots of clean, filtered water — no more than 1L per hour) and avoiding gluten, especially bread.

For longer-lasting relief, it’s important to consider:

  • A more nourishing, anti-inflammatory diet and aim to cut back on irritants such as sugar and alcohol for eg.

  • Managing stress levels — as this affects hydration and gut health (check out my upcoming event)

  • Targeted gut healing protocols — to soothe inflammation and support the bowel

  • Prioritising quality sleep — for immune regulation and recovery

If you’re keen to explore how you can be symptom-free and thrive through hay fever season, I offer consultations that can focus on nutrition and you have the option to add Food Intolerance testing.

Let's get you thriving again without the irritation and intense discomfort!

Best
